FCLEDC Final Release or Transfer

Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center is the county's principal adult jail. Its records distinguish “Final Release” from “Custody Release.” A final release processes a person who fulfilled a sentence or met the legal conditions to leave the jail. Custody Release can describe secure movement for court, warrant service, medical appointments, interviews, federal court, or another authorized transfer. Passing through the release area therefore does not prove that a person returned to the community.

A person can leave FCLEDC after bond, an unsecured release, supervised pretrial release, time served, sentence completion, dismissal, acquittal, or another court order. Even then, a different warrant, sentence, hold, or detainer can keep that person in custody. A transfer to NCDAC, another county jail, federal authorities, or ICE ends the Forsyth jail placement but begins or continues custody elsewhere.

Confirm an FCLEDC Release

The FCSO P2C Inmate Inquiry is the official online starting point, but the Sheriff describes it as an inmate inquiry rather than a released-person archive. The research browser could not access the live application, so no unverified field list or former-inmate retention period should be assumed.

1. Search the person's name in P2C. A returned confined record answers current custody, not release.
2. If the person is absent or the application fails, call FCLEDC at 336-917-7600 with the full name, date of birth, and booking number if known.
3. Ask for the actual release date and time, release authority, final-release or transfer disposition, and receiving agency.
4. Check NC SAVAN/VINELink for a custody event and eCourts for the bond action, judgment, or release order.
5. If the answer is transfer, move to the named system, such as NCDAC OPI, another county, BOP, or ICE.
6. Request the final-release documents when the event is no longer visible or the sources conflict.

A court disposition can explain why one case no longer supports detention, but it may precede physical discharge while staff complete identity, hold, and property checks. A VINE event is useful corroboration, not a certified jail ledger. FCSO remains the source for its final-release sheet.

FCLEDC Release Record Fields

A focused request should identify the exact booking and seek the fields needed to distinguish a community exit from a transfer. Asking broadly for every inmate record can produce delay or a less useful response.

Ask for the booking sheet, entry and release summary, release order or authorization, and nonmedical jail-management history. Security, medical, juvenile, investigative, and other exempt information may be removed. If part is withheld, ask FCSO to identify the statutory basis and provide all segregable public material.

Request FCLEDC Release Records

The FCSO official contact route can route a records request. Address a narrow request to FCSO Administration at 301 N. Church Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101, or call 336-917-7001 for routing. Use the detention-center number for a same-day custody question.

North Carolina's Public Records Act calls for inspection at reasonable times and copies “as promptly as possible,” but it provides no single fixed response deadline. Under §132-6.2, an uncertified copy generally cannot cost more than the actual direct reproduction cost. A reasonable special-service charge may apply when a request requires extensive staff or technology use. Ask for an estimate before approving such work.

The State Archives County Sheriff's Office schedule includes entry and release summaries, arrest sheets, commitments, release orders, work-release records, and pretrial-release agreements. It authorizes destruction three years after release or transfer if adopted locally and no audit, litigation, or other hold applies. That back-office period does not promise that a former resident stays visible online.

Timing can explain a mismatch among sources. A judge may enter an order before detention staff finish identity checks, other-hold review, paperwork, and the physical discharge process. NC SAVAN may receive its agency feed after the jail event. Record the date and time each source was checked, then ask FCSO to resolve a conflict instead of choosing the result that appears first.

A request can also ask for the booking photograph tied to the identified booking, if maintained and disclosable. Section 132-1 broadly addresses government records, including photographs, while §132-1.4 can protect criminal-investigation materials. FCSO may redact or withhold protected material. Ask for the exact provision supporting a denial and for any release fields that can be separated from the protected portion.

FCLEDC Court Release Authority

The Forsyth court file helps explain the legal basis for release. Smart Search in the statewide eCourts Portal can show bond changes, hearings, dispositions, judgments, sentences, and later events. Yet Portal information is not the official court record, and a legal event is not always the physical jail exit time. Another case or agency hold may still apply.

Pair the clerk's document with the FCSO final-release entry to establish both authority and physical disposition.

FCLEDC State and Federal Transfers

When FCSO reports “transfer to Corrections,” search the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction rather than continuing to treat the P2C disappearance as release. NCDAC OPI can show prison custody, community supervision, or inactive history. A transfer to Forsyth Correctional Center or another state prison is continued state custody.

Federal and immigration paths also require care. USMS manages much federal pretrial detention and may use local contract beds. BOP primarily covers sentenced federal prisoners and can show a release date for former federal custody. ICE's public locator focuses on current detainees and people released from ICE custody within a limited recent period. A Forsyth jail “release to ICE” is a transfer to immigration custody, not an unconditional community release.

No standalone federal prison or ICE detention center was identified in Forsyth County during the official facility sweep. That fact does not prevent a federal pretrial placement or an immigration transfer from passing through the county jail. The FCSO disposition must name the recipient before BOP, USMS, or ICE becomes the appropriate follow-up source.

Forsyth County Detention Center Facts

The official FCSO detention-center page describes FCLEDC as an adult maximum-security jail for male and female pretrial detainees and sentenced misdemeanants. It has 735 modular cells and a stated capacity of 1,016. These characteristics distinguish the jail from the minimum-custody state prison and the county's juvenile service system.

The last two figures come from the FCSO 2024 annual report's Operational Services table. They are separate categories. Transfers to Corrections are not community releases, and the report does not define every subcategory as nonoverlapping. The reported monthly average was 656 releases.

Downtown location is useful context but not a release promise. The detention complex lies between Second, Third, Church, and Chestnut streets. The Clark Campbell Transportation Center at 100 W. Fifth Street is a few downtown blocks away. No reviewed FCSO source states a standard release door, release time, or jail-provided transportation.

FCLEDC Mail After Release

FCSO publishes an unusual post-release document route for scanned mail. A released resident may request digital scans by emailing inmatemail@fcso.us with the resident's name, inmate ID, and the email address that should receive the scans. This policy serves mail recovery and does not replace a release-status request.
